Setting personal minimums that you'll actually keep

How to pick the numbers, what a reasonable starting set looks like, and the commitment rules that stop you from renegotiating on the ramp.

Personal minimums are written limits (ceiling, visibility, wind, crosswind) that you set above the legal minimums, decided on the ground while calm, so the go or no go decision is already made before the pressure arrives.

Legal minimums are what keeps the certificate; personal minimums are what keeps the pilot. The FAA's aeronautical decision making guidance (AC 60-22, PHAK chapter 2) keeps returning to one finding: accident chains rarely start in the air. They start at a desk, with a forecast that was almost good enough and a reason to go anyway. A written number you committed to last month is the cheapest safety equipment you will ever own.

How do you pick the numbers?

Start from what you handled comfortably and recently, not what you once survived: take the toughest conditions you have flown in the last 90 days and add a margin.

The FAA's worksheet approach, condensed to four steps:

  1. Review your experience. Certificates, ratings, total and recent hours, and the strongest wind, lowest ceiling, and worst visibility you have handled recently and comfortably.
  2. Set a baseline from that comfort level, category by category: ceiling, visibility, surface wind, crosswind, runway length, fuel reserve.
  3. Add a margin. A common starting rule for newer pilots: at least double the legal minimum for ceiling and visibility, and set crosswind at two thirds of what you have actually demonstrated.
  4. Write them down and date them. An unwritten minimum is an opinion, and opinions lose arguments with get there itis.

The decision is a comparison, not a judgment call: today's ceiling clears your line, so it is a go. On another day the same chart says no, and the chart doesn't argue.

What does a reasonable starting set look like?

A common starting set for a newer VFR private pilot: 3,000 ft ceilings and 5 SM by day, 5,000 ft and 7 SM at night, surface wind 15 knots, crosswind 7 knots, and fuel on the ground with an hour in the tanks.

How do you actually keep them?

Three commitment rules do most of the work: adjust only on the ground, only raise them in flight, and never lower them the same day you fly.

  • No same day edits. The moment a number is negotiable on the ramp, it isn't a minimum, it is a mood. Change the sheet at home, dated, after thinking about why.
  • In flight, numbers only move up. Weather worse than forecast, unexpected fatigue, a rough running engine: any of these can raise today's line. Nothing that happens in the airplane lowers it.
  • Tell someone. A flying partner, your CFI, the group chat. Externalized commitments survive pressure that private ones don't.
  • Review on a schedule. Every six months, after a long layoff, after a new rating, and after any flight that scared you. Minimums should tighten with rust and can loosen with fresh training.
  • Pair them with the PAVE check. Numbers cover the weather; PAVE (Pilot, Aircraft, enVironment, External pressures) catches the day you are legal, above minimums, and still shouldn't go.

Personal minimums FAQ

Are personal minimums required by the FAA?

No regulation requires them, but the FAA strongly recommends them in its aeronautical decision making guidance, examiners ask about them, and 14 CFR 91.103 already requires you to become familiar with all available information. Minimums are how you act on that information consistently.

Should minimums differ by airport?

The numbers stay the same; the inputs change. A short, obstructed strip effectively raises your runway and crosswind requirements, and high elevation fields bring density altitude into the check. That is why the minimums tool evaluates a specific airport's live conditions rather than weather in the abstract.

What about IFR personal minimums?
