How to enter the traffic pattern at a nontowered airport
The 45° entry, the midfield crossing alternative, the heading math for any runway, and how to know when the pattern turns right instead of left.
The entry the FAA recommends at a nontowered airport is a 45° leg to the midpoint of the downwind, flown at pattern altitude, typically 1,000 ft AGL (AC 90-66C).
Nothing in the regulations requires that entry; 14 CFR 91.126 only requires that turns be made in the charted direction. But the 45 is the entry every other pilot expects, it puts your eyes on the whole downwind before you join it, and it is the geometry the examiner wants on your checkride. The standard pattern in one paragraph
A standard traffic pattern is flown with left turns at 1,000 ft AGL, around five named legs: upwind, crosswind, downwind, base, and final.
Downwind parallels the runway in the direction opposite landing; base is a 90° turn toward the runway; final lines up with it. Turns are left unless the airport publishes right traffic for that runway end (14 CFR 91.126(b)(1)). Pattern altitude is typically 1,000 ft AGL for piston singles, but check the Chart Supplement: plenty of airports publish nonstandard TPAs, and large or turbine aircraft fly 1,500 ft AGL.
How do you fly the 45° entry?
Approach the downwind leg's midpoint from outside the pattern on a heading 45° off the downwind heading, level at pattern altitude, then turn onto downwind.
The mistakes AC 90-66C calls out are entering while descending (you can't see traffic below you, and they can't see you against the sky) and joining at the numbers instead of midfield. Be level at TPA well before the entry, ideally a couple of miles out.
The heading math
Three steps, workable in your head for any runway:
- Downwind heading = runway heading reversed (±180°).
- Entry heading = downwind heading, offset 45° toward the runway.
- Turn from the entry heading onto the downwind heading at midfield.
Runway heading 300° → downwind heading 120°
45° entry heading = 120° − 45° = 075° → turn to 120° at midfield
Same runway with RIGHT traffic: entry heading = 120° + 45° = 165°
Whether you add or subtract 45 depends on which side the pattern lives. The entry always converges with the flow of the downwind, never against it. Arriving from the wrong side: the midfield crossing
When you arrive on the opposite side of the pattern, the method AC 90-66C prefers is to cross midfield at least 500 ft above pattern altitude, fly clear (about 2 miles), descend, then teardrop back to join the standard 45° entry.
The alternative the AC also sanctions: cross midfield at pattern altitude and join the downwind directly on the turn from crosswind to downwind. It saves three minutes, but it blinds you to traffic already established on downwind and surprises pilots who expect everyone on the 45. Use it only when the pattern is quiet, and announce it clearly. Whatever you do, don't descend into the downwind from above; that is where midair geometry is worst.
How do you know if a runway has right traffic?
Right traffic is marked "RP" (plus the runway number) next to the airport symbol on VFR sectional charts, listed for each runway in the Chart Supplement, and flagged in the FAA's NASR airport database.
Right traffic exists for a reason: terrain, noise abatement, a parallel runway, an obstruction. Treating it as optional points you straight at the airplanes flying it right. It is also far more common than "standard pattern" implies: about 1 in 5 US airports has at least one runway with charted right traffic (we mapped every one of them). Three places to catch it:
- Sectional: "RP 12" near the airport symbol means right traffic for runway 12. ("RP*" means it is intermittent or part time; go read the Chart Supplement.)
- Chart Supplement: the remark for each runway, plus any nonstandard TPA.

Radio calls that match the geometry
Announce yourself on CTAF at 8 to 10 miles out, on the 45, on each pattern leg, and on final: position first, intentions second, airport name at both ends.
"Midfield left downwind, runway three zero" only helps if you are actually midfield on the left downwind; the calls and the entry geometry are one system. Two habits from AC 90-66C worth keeping: use the airport name at the start and end of each call (nearby fields share frequencies), and skip "any traffic please advise." The AC specifically asks pilots not to use it.
Pattern entry FAQ
Is the 45° entry legally required?
No. The only regulatory requirement at a nontowered airport in Class G or E is turn direction (14 CFR 91.126 and 91.127). The 45 is an FAA recommendation, but deviating from what everyone expects needs a better reason than convenience.
What altitude is "pattern altitude" if none is published?
1,000 ft AGL is the traditional default for piston aircraft, and AC 90-66C recommends it absent a published TPA. SkyReady airport pages show the charted TPA when the FAA publishes one and label the 1,000 ft AGL assumption when it doesn't.
Can I fly straight in at a nontowered airport?
Yes. Straight in approaches aren't prohibited, and instrument traffic flies them routinely. But AC 90-66C is blunt that pattern traffic has the right to expect standard entries: if you fly straight in, announce early and often, and yield to traffic established in the pattern rather than forcing a conflict on base.
